SOUND DESIGN

AWARD-WINNING AUDIO THAT IMMERSES

Today's games demand sophisticated audio that adapts dynamically to player behavior and environmental shifts. We deliver custom sound design solutions that integrate seamlessly with your mechanics, narrative, and technical requirements across all platforms and engines, transforming your game world into a living, breathing environment.
Our team crafts every audio element beyond music and dialogue – sound effects that react to player actions, environmental audio that makes spaces feel authentic, interface sounds that guide interactions, and foley that gives weight to every surface and movement.

UI, AMBIENCE, SFX

Every sound serves a purpose – from leaves rustling in the wind to explosions that shake the earth. Our game sound designers craft user interface audio that guides players intuitively, ambient soundscapes that establish mood and location, and custom SFX for games that make every action feel impactful. We design audio for dynamic systems where sounds adapt to player choices and environmental conditions, from subtle menu transitions to thunderous spell casting.

FOLEY

Our Foley artists capture the organic sounds that give your game world weight and authenticity. Using an extensive collection of props and recording techniques, we create audio that feels viscerally real – the crunch of snow underfoot, clothing rustling during stealth movement, the layered chaos of a bustling marketplace. We continuously expand our sound library with field recordings from unique locations, ensuring every surface and interaction has its own authentic sound.

IMPLEMENTATION

Great implementation work is essential for award-winning game audio. It should be straightforward, well planned, and not a bottleneck for the dev team. Working with audio middleware or systems like Wwise, MetaSounds and FMOD, plus direct implementation in Unity and Unreal, we set up everything, such as audio triggers, reverb zones, and occlusion systems, at pro level, and optimize performance for any platform. You'll get crystal-clear documentation, and an asset structure so organized it makes project management a breeze, from development through post-launch updates. Our in-house technical sound designers are also available to integrate edited voiceover dialogue in-game, whether you will be using middleware or not.

AUDIO PROGRAMMING

When projects call for deeper technical integration, our team also provides custom audio programming solutions. From writing bespoke code and developing dedicated plugins to building intelligent systems that drive adaptive sound behavior, we design tools that push creative boundaries while streamlining production. Our goal is to give your game the flexibility and control needed to deliver a truly dynamic audio experience.

YOUR QUESTIONS ANSWERED

What is sound design in video games?

Sound design in games involves creating and implementing audio elements like sound effects, ambient environments, UI feedback, and Foley to support gameplay, story, and immersion. It’s how the game world sounds “alive”, helping players interpret what’s happening around them and reinforcing emotional and narrative cues.

Why is sound design so important for player immersion?

Sound design creates the believable world that draws players in and keeps them engaged. Every footstep, weapon impact, and environmental detail helps establish the game's reality. Side’s sound designers understand that immersion breaks when audio feels disconnected from action. We create layered soundscapes that respond naturally to player interactions, using spatial audio and dynamic mixing to make every moment feel authentic.

What are some game sound design implementation techniques?

Implementation techniques vary by engine and toolset, but typically include syncing audio to in-game events, setting up dynamic mix states, spatializing sounds in 3D space, and using middleware like FMOD or Wwise for real-time audio behavior. Good implementation ensures that sounds respond correctly to gameplay without disrupting performance or immersion.

Do studios offer custom sound effects for games?

Many do. Side creates custom sound effects tailored to your game's mechanics and technical requirements. Our sound designers craft UI audio, environmental sounds, interactive SFX, and Foley that adapts to player actions and environmental conditions. We handle seamless integration with Unity, Unreal, and custom engines, optimizing audio performance without sacrificing quality.

How does Foley recording work for video games?

There are many approaches you can take. Some studios rely on sound libraries, whereas others create sounds using props. Side's Foley artists use a collection of props and specialized recording techniques to capture authentic sounds for game interactions. Through field recordings at unique locations or simply getting creative in the studio, we continuously expand our sound library, ensuring comprehensive coverage for various game environments. Traditional Foley methods combine with creative props and controlled environments to deliver professional-quality assets that integrate seamlessly into your game.
